The Pat Petrillo Master Classes on November 25, 2007
We had our Pat Petrillo Master Classes on November 25, 2007. One at 1pm and another at 5pm. 14 people attended in all. It was a blast and once again, I must praise Pat. He did a great job.
The classes were about 3 hours long and he covered many topics. A lot of time was spent on hand technique and grooves. He brought his new Collective Book called The Roots of Groove and the students played to many music tracks through the PA System.
Speaking of The Roots of Groove...if you are looking for a good CD with tracks to play along to, this is definitely one! Like the Tommy Igoe tracks, this books offers tracks (some styles that Igoe doesn't) with music styles such as Motown, R&B/ Soul, various shuffles, funk, go-go, hip hop, and more. I believe there is 27 tracks in all on the CD. Seriously - this is GOOD stuff. The tracks are great.
It was interesting to see a lot of younger students, who have great chops and can do many great things from a technical aspect, sit behind the kit and struggled big time with simple things like laying down a solid shuffle. Most of them had never tried to play to a motown groove. It was a good eye opener for them and it was cool to see all these younger players get turned on to some of these older styles. This is a book I'll be including in my teachings from now on. Here's the book: http://www.justdrumsonline.com/store/pc-2822-55-petrillo-pat-the-roots-of-groove.aspx.
We had a great time. If you ever get a chance to check out Pat in a clinic, make sure you do so.
Now for the pics!
